Shootings. Bombings. Genocide. Racism. Senseless, blind hatred. Conflict breeding conflict.
Amidst the confusion, disagreements, and chaos there is one thing I’m sure all of us can agree on: our world is anything but stable. Any sense of control we thought we had is crumbling; what we thought was a rock is quickly disintegrating, now sand sifting through the gaps between fingers…
How do we go about daily life sending our children into such a tumultuous world? The middle east is riddled with terrorism and war. Africa and its people are being exploited for resources. Countries in Europe are shifting in power. Who even knows what’s going on with Russia, North Korea, or Iran… The United States has an unpredictable, loose-cannon for a president. Train stations, airports, shopping malls, schools, and churches are being riddled with violence all over the world. Fear infiltrates our peace as we attempt to block out all things that could present a threat. My initial reaction is to hoard my money, prepare to jump ship or hunker down at any moment. Who to trust? Where is it safe? The anxiety is heavy and our communities are feeling it.
This could go on in one of two ways…
The violence could decrease as security measures increase, taking back our airports, train stations, schools, churches, and shopping centers. The world could unite in love and peace, finding friendship over foes. Opportunities abound internationally, doors are opened as differences are set aside and common ground is uncovered.
Or, the violence could increase, any day being a day that could result in tragedy. Safety is guaranteed nowhere. Do you go to the shopping mall? Do you ever fly? Do you ever drive? Do you ever go into a school? Do you ever go into a church? Violence is not the only taker-of-lives; natural disasters, disease from our nutritionally-void food, and accidents also steal our health and resources.
Time is so precious and it flies by so fast. Life could be taken at anytime… and most of us still live the lives we love only on the weekends. We work jobs that mean nothing to us, unfulfilled and uninspired we accept the spoon-fed-life, living vicariously through videos on the internet and television. Our ancestors fought hard to create a life with less struggle for us… most of us no longer have to search for food and water each day, we have the world at our fingertips through the power of technology, we can travel great distances through cars, trains, planes, and ships. Luxury!
And yet we find ourselves living the same year on repeat, scratching our immediate itches, settling into comfort. We will accept this meaningless job because the illusion of security that the paycheck brings makes us feel better. Our survival instincts tell us to stay safe. Stay away from the unfamiliar…
So if the world was completely safe tomorrow what would be the best way to live out the day? Maybe create a home, nurture relationships, start that passion-project you’ve always dreamt of… maybe take a trip to a foreign land and see the world through the eyes of another. Take risks, quit the job you hate, because opportunities are endless!
And if the world increases in danger tomorrow, what should we do? Hide away in fear until we die? What if what the world needs most is bold, fearless exploration? What if the best way to combat hatred and distrust is to go to new lands in peace and get to know our foreign neighbors? Heck, if the world is ending soon, why not get out and see it while the planes are still flying and the ships are still sailing? If time to make memories could be cut off at any moment, we might as well make the most of it and stop spending it on meaningless, purposeless projects.
I used to travel for myself; so I could see beautiful landscapes, eat new foods, create memories with my loved ones… What if it’s equally important to travel for others, for the world? To learn from the other side of this planet that we all share as home. To discover the many ways humans do life from other cultures…
To spend time and money on things we can learn from is never a waste.
Now more than ever, our world needs brave, love-filled people to get out of their comfort zones and meet up with one another in foreign lands. Travel is more accessible and affordable than EVER before… And YOU, YOU deserve a life that you are madly in love with. You were created to live an abundantly exciting and fulfilling life. Anything less than that is selling yourself short.
What will this shift look like? Trade the next 3 trips to the mall for a trip to Fiji… Trade the next gaming-system purchase for a trip to Europe. Spend each penny intentionally and earn travel through travel organizations. Instead of binge-drinking the weekends away, plan trips with friends. This shift will require some energy, self-discipline, and effort. We may have to cut-out some daily perks to experience life-changing adventures. We may have to get out of our comfort zone exploring lands that have absolutely no semblance to home. We may have to risk appearing to others as crazy, lazy, or broke while quitting the meaningless job to discover what inspires us. We may have to look less “cool” by trading in that expensive car for one that allows us to afford more experiences.
Who really controls your bank account? Who really controls your time?
Worst case scenario, we spend our last dime on a trip to somewhere we will never go again. What’s the point of life? To remain as comfortable as possible for as long as possible? To live on autopilot until our minds and bodies deteriorate? Or to continue growing, evolving, and learning? The worst travel experiences are still more valuable than an unfulfilling day.
I invite you to make this year nothing like last year. I invite you to challenge every part of your current life. Why do you go to work? Why do you do this type of work? Whose dream are you building? Where is this road leading? In 5 years from now what will life look like? Will you be living the same year on repeat for the next 40 years? Go out on a limb and take a risk. Choose faith over fear.
Maybe what this world needs most is each of us to invest in loving one another across the globe; to discover not our differences, but our commonalities.
Maybe travel isn’t just about you…
Maybe it’s about them.
The adventure is yours to create. Less than $127 and it’s yours. There is nothing more valuable than experience. The time shall pass either way, and only God knows how much of it we have left.
